Thailand diving
trips are generally 4 to 7 day safaris leaving from and returning to
Phuket on Thailand's west
coast.
Thailand diving is very popular and the quality of boats vary greatly from small
wooden boats and sailing yachts to large motor cruisers.
The prices for diving in Thailand also vary greatly but you generally get what you pay for and so if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Thailand liveaboards normally cost from around 150 -200 Euros a day for a decent boat dependant on such things as the size of the boat, cabins, en-suite bathrooms, air-con etc. There are 2 main destinations visited by the liveaboards in Thailand, the Similan islands in the north and Hin Daeng in the south.
Similan islands diving trips to the north of Phuket generally last from 4-7 days and include diving at Richelieu rock, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai. Hin Daeng diving safaris to the South of Phuket take place over the weekend and include diving in Koh Phi Phi and also some Koh Ha diving featuring some unusual macro and great caves.
Southern Thailand diving is a great experience as you get to dive Phi Phi when all the daily divers have gone home.
In summary: Mermaid 2 runs 2 trips a week leaving on a Monday and Friday, one to the north (Similan islands) and one to the south (Hin Daeng), you can join either one or both, making a 3,4 or 7 day safari. Black Manta runs 4 day liveaboards to the Similans and Richelieu rock from Taplamu, north of Phuket, visiting all the top spots in the Similans and Richelieu area. Mv Pawara runs 4-7 day Similan islands safaris including Surin island including all the highlights of the area.
Thailand diving on the west coast is done to 2 main destinations and the boats leave from and return to Phuket or Taplamu on the west coast.
Similan island liveaboard trips generally last 4-7 days and also visit the more northern islands past the Similan islands to dive Richelieu rock and Koh Bon.
The South Andaman sea trips or Hin Daeng liveaboard trips include diving Koh Phi Phi and also diving Koh Ha along the way and these normally last 2-3 days.
